Zain Hesham Hamdy claimed Egypt’s fourth gold medal at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games by winning the men’s 200m butterfly, while also securing a third personal title at the event.
The swimmer’s victory added Egypt’s fifth medal of the Games, with the country’s haul standing at four golds and one bronze.
Zain had already won gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly events before completing his treble in the 200m race. His achievement marks an unprecedented personal milestone at the Youth Olympic Games.
Egypt is competing in Dakar with a delegation of 45 male and female athletes across 19 sports. The team is, however, without several disciplines in which the country has traditionally been a strong contender.
Sundus Senbal had earlier made history for Egypt by winning gold in the Gunshu stick event in wushu kung fu. She scored 9.330 points to become the first female athlete in the sport’s history to win a medal at the Youth Olympic Games.
The Egyptian medal tally was also boosted by Ali El-Ramly, who took bronze in the judo -81kg category.
El-Ramly defeated an opponent from the United Arab Emirates during his campaign but was beaten by the Iranian champion. He then won his match against a competitor from Cyprus to secure a place on the podium.
Zain’s success in the 200m butterfly provided Egypt with its latest gold medal and extended his outstanding run in Dakar, where he has won all three of his individual events.
