Pitso Mosimane’s selection for South Africa’s back-to-back 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya has created opportunities for several players, but the 12 omitted names remain part of his wider plans.
Some of those left out have already featured in the national-team setup, while others are continuing to build a case for their first major opportunity. With the qualifiers representing one stage of the longer journey towards AFCON 2027, performances that impress Mosimane and his technical team could still lead to future call-ups.
The most notable omission is Themba Zwane, with Mosimane describing the decision to leave out the 37-year-old as one of the most emotional choices he has made since becoming Bafana Bafana coach.
“It was emotional for me to drop Themba Zwane; it was so difficult. But this is the national team, and it is not about emotions. It is about doing what is right and being honest,” Mosimane said.
The coach also revealed that he contacted Zwane personally to explain the decision, rather than allowing the experienced midfielder to learn of it through the media.
Mosimane credited Zwane with helping him understand the personalities within the squad and preserve its culture. Zwane responded positively, telling the coach that the country came first and that he had already made his contribution.
The midfielder’s international future has not been ruled out. Mosimane continues to value Zwane’s influence and contribution to the national team, leaving open the possibility of a return.
The players still in contention
Ndamane and Sibisi are among the other notable omissions. Both have been regular members of the national-team setup, and their absence from this squad does not diminish the progress they have made or the competition they provide in their positions.
Aden McCarthy, Boitumelo Radiopane and Nkosikhona Radebe are also among the players seeking to force their way into the squad. Their club performances have strengthened their claims and provided encouragement that an opportunity at international level could follow.
The remaining omissions are Lebohang Maboe, Thakasani Mbanjwa, Luke Le Roux, Bevin Titus and Nqaba Xulu.
Thapelo Maseko was left out because of injury. He will hope to recover and place himself back in contention once he is available again.
