Senegal head coach Patrick Vieira has made a major selection decision by leaving experienced midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye out of his squad for the upcoming double-header against Sudan in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The omission marks the first time since 2012 that the Everton midfielder has been left out of a Senegal national team squad, bringing an end to his remarkable run of consistent involvement with the Teranga Lions.
Gueye has been a key figure for Senegal over the years, establishing himself as one of the country’s most influential midfielders through his experience, leadership and consistency at the highest level.
However, Vieira has opted to leave the 36-year-old out of his latest selection as he looks to introduce younger players into the national team setup.
Speaking at a press conference following the squad announcement, the Senegal manager accepted full responsibility for the decision, revealing that he had personally contacted the midfielder to explain his reasons for the omission.
“It was my decision. There are young players in this squad. I spoke to Idrissa on the phone and explained the reasons behind my decision,” Vieira said.
Gueye’s absence is particularly significant given his long-standing contribution to the national team. The experienced midfielder has represented Senegal at three FIFA World Cups and was part of the squad that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021.
He also holds the record for the most appearances for the Teranga Lions, underlining his importance to Senegalese football and his remarkable longevity at international level.
His omission represents a notable change in direction under Vieira, who appears keen to provide opportunities for younger talents while reshaping the squad ahead of future competitions.
Senegal will face Sudan in the third and fourth rounds of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers during the November international break, with Vieira expected to rely on his newly assembled squad to maintain the country’s qualification ambitions.
The absence of such an experienced campaigner will undoubtedly attract attention as the Teranga Lions prepare for their upcoming assignments.
