Milan’s difficult Europa League campaign took another turn for the worse as Ferencvarosi earned a historic 2-0 victory at San Siro on Thursday, only days after the Italian side’s derby success against Inter.
Lenny Joseph scored both goals for the Hungarian visitors, finding the net in the 52nd and 66th minutes. On each occasion, he was set up by Kristoffer Zachariassen.
The result leaves Milan with three points from four matches and down in 26th place in the league phase. Ferencvarosi, meanwhile, moved on to 12 points and climbed into second, behind leaders Bournemouth on goal difference.
Milan were unable to respond even after Ferencvarosi were reduced to 10 men when Bamidele Yusuf was sent off in the 77th minute. The home side created several opportunities but failed to score, allowing the visitors to secure a surprise victory.
The defeat came after Milan had beaten Inter 3-1 in the Milan derby, but it was their third loss in this season’s Europa League.
They began the competition with a 2-0 home defeat by Benfica before suffering a 3-0 loss away to Bournemouth. Their only victory came against Austrian side Salzburg, whom they beat 4-0.
Ferencvarosi’s win puts them level on points with Bournemouth at the top end of the standings, while Milan remain near the bottom after four rounds of matches.
