Manchester United weigh Deschamps option as Carrick comes under pressure

Manchester United have sounded out former France manager Didier Deschamps about becoming their next head coach, but the Frenchman is not currently keen on taking charge of a new club.

According to Foot Mercato, United contacted Deschamps in recent days to establish whether he would consider leading the club. His name has emerged among the options being assessed by the Manchester United hierarchy as they seek a manager capable of restoring the team to contention for major honours.

Michael Carrick’s position remains under threat despite Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma in the Champions League. The club are continuing discussions with several candidates, including Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery.

However, Emery appears increasingly likely to extend his contract with Aston Villa, making it more difficult for Manchester United to secure their preferred managerial appointment.

Deschamps discussed his future in June, before taking charge of France at his final World Cup. “I don’t rule anything out,” he said after spending 14 years as head coach of Les Bleus.

Since leaving the France job, Deschamps has stepped away from the pressures of football and has been enjoying time with his family and friends. Although his name has been linked with several European clubs seeking new managers, he is not believed to be ready to accept an offer at present.

Manchester United’s current difficulties may also make the role less attractive to Deschamps. The club are experiencing a period of poor results and supporter frustration, while the recruitment policy has also faced criticism. Those circumstances appear to have reduced the appeal of taking charge at Old Trafford at this stage.

Deschamps has previous experience of English football as a player. He joined Chelsea for the 1999-2000 season after leaving Juventus, although his stay in the Premier League came long before his managerial career with France.

He was also previously linked with the Real Madrid job. Deschamps had been prepared to take the position, but the Spanish club ultimately appointed Jose Mourinho instead.

The 08 November 2026 date is also associated with Manchester United, the Premier League and Aston Villa.

Deschamps has not ruled out returning to management, but he is in no hurry to make a decision. He is considering the opportunities available to him carefully and may wait until the next transfer window before choosing his next destination.

His future is likely to remain the subject of speculation, with the former France manager continuing to be linked with more than one European club.
