CAF Super Cup offers Miguel Cardoso chance to reach 200-goal milestone with Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns can win another trophy under head coach Miguel Cardoso when they face USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

The match pits the CAF Champions League holders against the Confederation Cup winners, with the winners set to receive USD500 000 (approximately R8,3 million). The losing side will earn USD250 000 (approximately R4,16 million).

Victory would give Sundowns their third trophy of the season. The MTN8 and African-Asian-Pacific Cup are already in the club’s trophy cabinet at Chloorkop, while the Carling Knockout, FIFA Challenger Cup and potentially the FIFA Intercontinental Cup remain available before Christmas.

The fixture also carries a personal milestone for Cardoso. Sundowns need only two more goals to reach 200 since the Portuguese coach took charge.

The Tshwane club have scored 198 goals in 107 matches overseen by Cardoso, who arrived in December 2024. During that period, Sundowns have won four trophies, including the CAF Champions League and the Betway Premiership.

Their attacking record has remained strong this season, with 40 goals scored in 19 matches.

Sundowns found the net 88 times in 50 games across all competitions last term. From Cardoso’s first match in charge, against Raja Casablanca on 15 December 2024, until the end of the 2024/25 campaign, they scored 70 goals in 38 matches.

That equates to an average of just under two goals per game during Cardoso’s tenure.

Beyond the financial reward and the opportunity to add another major honour, the CAF Super Cup therefore gives Sundowns the chance to mark the coach’s reign with a significant goals milestone.
