Villarreal star Pape Gueye opens up on heavy PSG defeat
Senegal international Pape Gueye has revealed that he struggled to sleep following Villarreal’s humiliating 6-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, November 3, admitting that the heavy loss has been difficult for the Spanish side to come to terms with.
Villarreal endured a disastrous evening against the reigning European champions, conceding six goals in a one-sided encounter that exposed their defensive weaknesses and inability to cope with PSG’s attacking movement.
The Spanish outfit suffered a particularly damaging spell in the first half, conceding four goals within just seven minutes as the French champions took complete control of the contest.
The result left Gueye and his teammates struggling to understand how things went so badly wrong, with the Senegalese midfielder admitting that he had never experienced such a heavy defeat during his professional career.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, the Villarreal midfielder disclosed that the disappointment followed him beyond the pitch, revealing that he barely managed to get any sleep as he reflected on the team’s performance.
“I didn’t sleep much because we’re trying to understand what happened. It was the first time that had ever happened to me; it’s the first time I’ve conceded six goals in a match,” Gueye admitted.
The former Marseille midfielder also pointed to PSG’s impressive movement and collective attacking organisation as major factors behind Villarreal’s difficulties throughout the encounter.
According to Gueye, the danger posed by the French champions was not limited to their midfield players, as several members of the team constantly changed positions and created problems for Villarreal’s defensive structure.
He explained that PSG’s ability to interchange positions made it difficult for the Spanish side to track their opponents and maintain defensive organisation.
“It wasn’t just the midfielders moving all over the place; it’s a team effort. There were times when Hakimi was right next to me, or other times the young Mayulu. When it came to their movement, they really knew how to get around,” he added.
PSG’s fluid attacking approach proved difficult for Villarreal to contain, with the French side exploiting spaces and creating several opportunities throughout the match.
For Gueye and his teammates, the heavy defeat represents a painful setback in their Champions League campaign, particularly given the manner in which the goals arrived.
The Senegalese midfielder will now be hoping Villarreal can respond positively, put the disappointing result behind them and regain their confidence in their upcoming fixtures.
