Trey Nyoni targets No. 6 role at Liverpool

Liverpool are closing in on a new long-term contract for highly rated midfielder Trey Nyoni, with the club keen to secure his future after resisting a £30 million approach from Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window.

The 19-year-old England U21 international has been in discussions with the Premier League champions over fresh terms for several months, with an agreement reportedly close, according to The Athletic.

All parties are understood to be keen on continuing their relationship, with Liverpool prepared to reward Nyoni for his growing importance to the first team and his development under head coach Andoni Iraola.

The proposed extension is expected to run until at least 2030, underlining the club’s confidence in the teenager’s potential and their desire to make him part of their long-term plans.

Nyoni’s progress has attracted considerable attention, particularly after Nottingham Forest tested Liverpool’s resolve with a £30 million bid during the summer.

However, the offer was rejected as Iraola made it clear that the midfielder would have an important role to play in his squad.

Iraola’s faith grows as Nyoni breaks into Liverpool’s first team

Nyoni has steadily established himself within Liverpool’s senior setup, earning opportunities across domestic and European competitions.

The former Leicester City youngster has made 12 appearances in all competitions, with his growing involvement reflecting the confidence the coaching staff have placed in his abilities.

One of the significant milestones in his development came when he made his first Premier League start against Arsenal at Anfield.

Liverpool, however, suffered a 1-0 defeat against Mikel Arteta’s side, with the occasion still representing an important step in Nyoni’s progress at senior level.

He subsequently earned his first UEFA Champions League start against Fenerbahce, further demonstrating Iraola’s willingness to expose the young midfielder to the demands of elite European football.

The Liverpool manager is confident that Nyoni can develop into a regular contributor, with his performances and growing experience strengthening his position within the squad.

His emergence has also reinforced the club’s determination to retain promising young talents rather than allow them to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

£30m Nottingham Forest bid rejected

Nottingham Forest’s interest in Nyoni provided a clear indication of his growing reputation, with the club submitting a £30 million offer during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool turned down the proposal, unwilling to part ways with a player they consider an important part of their future.

Iraola was particularly keen to retain the midfielder, having identified him as someone who could contribute significantly to his plans.

The decision to reject such a substantial offer highlights Liverpool’s belief in Nyoni’s long-term value, especially as he continues to gain experience at the highest level.

With the teenager now on course to sign improved terms, the club appear determined to translate that confidence into a longer commitment.

New deal expected to extend beyond 2030

Nyoni signed a multi-year contract with Liverpool in June 2025, shortly after celebrating his 18th birthday.

However, the precise duration of that agreement was never publicly disclosed, leaving room for the club to negotiate improved terms as his status within the first team continues to grow.

The anticipated extension is expected to keep him at Anfield until at least 2030.
