Erling Haaland says Manchester City must become more clinical after his late goal secured a 3-2 victory over Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Norway striker struck in the 78th minute, converting a pass from Elliot Anderson to complete a dramatic win in the fourth round of the league phase. The result moved Manchester City on to nine points from four matches and up to seventh in the table.
The top eight teams qualify directly for the last 16, and Haaland believes City need to improve despite claiming all three points in Germany.
“When we were 1-0 up, we had to press more and try to score a second goal, perhaps even a third,” Haaland told UEFA’s official website. “That is what we have to do as a club. We have to work on improving that aspect.”
Haaland, who scored the winning goal, said his priority remained contributing to victories rather than focusing on personal achievements.
“The most important thing for me is helping the team win, and I managed to do that today,” he said. “But I think we need to put in more effort.”
The striker also singled out Anderson for praise after the English midfielder played a key role in his first Champions League appearance for Manchester City since joining the club last summer.
“He was amazing,” Haaland told TNT Sports. “It is a great start to his career with Manchester City. Honestly, that is what you expect from him – to come straight in and deliver an outstanding performance.
“But it is not easy. You need some time to adapt to everything. He was impressive, and all respect to him.”
Manchester City took the lead in the 37th minute when Castello Lukeba turned the ball into his own net. Leipzig levelled shortly after the restart through Ridle Baku, before Enzo Fernandez restored the visitors’ advantage in the 58th minute.
Antonio Nusa equalised for the German side three minutes later, setting up a tense finish. Haaland then settled the contest with his late strike, assisted by Anderson.
The victory strengthened Manchester City’s position in the race for a direct place in the last 16, although Haaland’s comments highlighted the team’s belief that the match should have been made more comfortable after taking the lead.
