Elias Mokwana signs three-year Kaizer Chiefs contract after turning down rival offers
Elias Mokwana has agreed a three-year contract with Kaizer Chiefs after rejecting several proposals from clubs in the PSL and overseas.
The 27-year-old winger was announced as Chiefs’ latest signing on Wednesday, having left Esperance Sportive de Tunis in September. He will wear the number 14 shirt, previously worn by Kaizer Chiefs legend Siphiwe Tshabalala.
Mokwana’s decision to move to the Soweto club was driven by his long-standing ambition to represent the team he supported as a child, rather than financial considerations.
“There were several teams that were interested in him, including two clubs from Durban. There was also an exciting offer from Morocco, but the transfer window closed before he could be released by his former club,” a source told KickOff.
“It was not about money.
“He always wanted to play for Kaizer Chiefs. This is a dream come true for him. He signed everything on Tuesday. He is happy and looking forward to a successful three years with Chiefs,” the source added.
Mokwana’s arrival is expected to provide encouragement for a Kaizer Chiefs side that has made an uneven start to the new season by the standards expected of the club.
They are fifth in the Betway Premiership after taking 14 points from nine matches. Leaders Mamelodi Sundowns have 26 points from 10 games.
The new signing could now begin his Chiefs career as the club prepare for their Carling Knockout quarter-final against Siwelele FC.
That match will be played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.
