Lekie FF suffer late heartbreak against Mamelodi Sundowns in CAF Women’s Champions League
Cameroonian side Lekie FF suffered a painful 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns after conceding a late own goal in their second Group A fixture at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League on Wednesday, November 4.
The encounter, played at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt, saw Lekie FF put up a determined fight against the South African giants before their resistance was finally broken in the closing stages.
Mamelodi Sundowns took the lead shortly before the interval, with Refilwe Tholakele finding the back of the net in the 42nd minute to give the South Africans a 1-0 advantage heading into half-time.
Despite falling behind, Lekie FF remained competitive after the break and continued to search for an equaliser. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 84th minute when Tim Shalom Makoma struck to restore parity and give the Cameroonian representatives renewed hope of securing a positive result.
However, their celebrations were short-lived as Mamelodi Sundowns regained the lead just four minutes later through an unfortunate own goal by Ivana Yakana in the 88th minute.
The late goal proved decisive as Sundowns held on to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory, collecting their first three points of the tournament.
For Lekie FF, the defeat represents a disappointing setback after opening their campaign with a goalless draw against Morocco’s FUS Rabat.
The Cameroonian outfit now face a crucial encounter against Egypt’s Masar on Saturday, November 7, knowing that a positive result will be vital to keeping their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
With the group stage approaching its decisive phase, Lekie FF will need to quickly recover from the disappointment against Sundowns and deliver a stronger performance in their final group fixture.
