Harry Kane targets a new role for the modern number nine

Harry Kane says his distinctive all-round game could change how future generations view the role of a centre-forward after becoming the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner.

The Bayern Munich striker believes few forwards combine his goalscoring record with his willingness to drop into midfield, contribute to build-up play and take on defensive responsibilities.

“I have a unique style and, in that respect, I am a unique Ballon d’Or winner,” Kane said in comments reported by Tribune. “There are not many forwards who play the way I do and achieve the numbers I achieve, while also dropping into midfield, contributing defensively and helping in many different areas.”

Kane, who is 33, said he hoped his approach would influence the way the position is understood in the future.

“Perhaps that will change the way people look at the centre-forward position in the future and give young players a different way of approaching the role,” he added. “I am proud of that.”

Kane reflects on route to the top

The England forward also spoke about the difficulties he encountered at the beginning of his career, saying his journey to the highest individual honour in football differed from that of many previous Ballon d’Or winners.

Kane said his achievement had been built on persistence and hard work, despite doubts over whether he would reach the top level.

“My path was a little different from that of the other Ballon d’Or winners,” he said. “After some difficult moments, particularly at the start of my career, perhaps some people did not expect me to reach this level.

“But through hard work, resilience and determination, I was able to achieve it.”

He also appeared to respond to those who have questioned his qualities, insisting that people with a strong understanding of the game have consistently appreciated his performances.

“People who know and understand football have always admired me, the way I play and how I approach matches,” Kane said.

A broader vision of the centre-forward

Kane’s description of his role extends beyond simply finishing chances. He regards his responsibilities as including movement away from the front line, helping his side progress the ball from deeper positions and contributing without possession.

Those aspects, he believes, distinguish him from a more traditional striker and have formed an important part of his identity as a player.

The Bayern Munich forward wants that interpretation of the position to influence younger footballers. He hopes future players will see the centre-forward role as one that can involve playmaking, defensive work and structural responsibility, as well as scoring goals.

Kane’s comments were made on 06 November 2026, following his recognition as the year’s Ballon d’Or winner.
