Ncikazi says Sundowns’ clinical edge ended Golden Arrows’ Carling Knockout Cup run
Golden Arrows head coach Mandla Ncikazi said Mamelodi Sundowns’ clinical finishing made the difference as his side were knocked out of the Carling Knockout Cup at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday evening.
The defeat was Golden Arrows’ second in a row since Ncikazi took charge. Iqraam Rayners scored the only goal in the 68th minute, with Antonio van Wyk’s effort taking a deflection and flying beyond goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi.
Ncikazi felt Golden Arrows produced a positive performance but were unable to make the most of the opportunities they created against the reigning champions.
“There are two ways to choose. You have to box smart against Sundowns. Does your quality allow you to go 50/50? Where can you benefit? We got the spaces, but the final passes weren’t there,” he said.
The coach said his team altered its approach during the match, including its pressing structure and formation, depending on the players introduced from the bench.
“We changed the way we pressed and the formation based on the personnel we brought on. We had some half chances, but we’re not as clinical as them,” Ncikazi added.
Rayners’ goal came from one of Sundowns’ limited opportunities, but Ncikazi accepted the result and said his focus would now turn to improving the team.
“They scored from their half-chance, but no ifs and buts. We go home and try to make the team better. That’s why we are coaches,” he said.
Golden Arrows will now switch their attention to their league campaign and have three weeks before their next fixture.
Ncikazi’s next match will take him back to Orlando, where Golden Arrows face Orlando Pirates on 28 November.
