Arne Slot linked with Newcastle rebuild after turning down Al Ahli approach

Matthias Jaissle is under growing pressure at Newcastle United, with Arne Slot being suggested as a possible replacement if the club decides to make a change.

Newcastle have lost their past two matches against Everton, increasing doubts over Jaissle’s ability to reverse the team’s decline. Supporters have recently jeered both the German manager and his players, with Newcastle criticised for a lack of attacking effectiveness and defensive vulnerability.

Jaissle succeeded Eddie Howe in a demanding role, taking charge as Newcastle began to alter their approach in the transfer market. The club’s summer recruitment was limited to players aged 24 or under, reflecting a longer-term plan to build a younger squad.

That strategy has not prevented calls for a change in the dugout. Some Newcastle supporters believe the team requires a more experienced manager who can impose his tactical ideas more effectively.

According to journalist Angus Sinclair, writing for Football FanCast, Slot has been proposed as a candidate to take charge at St James’ Park if Jaissle departs.

The Dutchman was also among the managers considered by the Saudi Public Investment Fund to replace Jaissle at Al Ahli last summer. However, Slot rejected the approach because he preferred to wait for an opportunity to return to work in Europe.

Although his spell at Liverpool did not end ideally, Slot made a strong impression during his first season in the Premier League in 2024-2025. He guided Liverpool to play an assertive attacking style and received widespread praise for his tactical approach and close attention to detail.

Michael Fonck, a former Manchester City defender, compared Slot with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, citing the Dutch coach’s tactical precision and commitment to his coaching principles.

The Football FanCast report argues that Slot is technically superior to Jaissle and could rebuild Newcastle while surpassing the achievements of Howe, provided he can reproduce the level he demonstrated during his first season at Liverpool.

Howe left a significant mark on Newcastle’s recent history before his departure. Under his management, the club qualified for the Champions League twice and won the English League Cup in 2025.

That triumph ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy, adding to the challenge facing any manager asked to follow Howe.
