Luis Enrique says Paris Saint-Germain’s position at the top of the UEFA Champions League league phase and their 20 goals in four matches are of little significance compared with their ambition to retain the trophy for a third successive season.
The Paris Saint-Germain manager was speaking after his side’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Villarreal at La Ceramica in the fourth round of the league phase.
The result moved Paris Saint-Germain to the summit and underlined their impressive attacking form, but Luis Enrique said the only outcome that would ultimately matter was winning the final in Madrid.
“None of this counts,” the former Spain manager said. “There will only be one champion in the final in Madrid, and our objective is to win the title there.
“In previous seasons, we have won the UEFA Champions League without finishing among the top eight in the league phase.”
Luis Enrique also defended his team’s attacking approach, insisting they would not abandon it to protect a lead or respond to difficult periods in a match.
“In football, I have seen teams score three goals in five minutes,” he said. “There is no point trying to defend; you have to focus on attacking.
“If we had conceded that number of goals in such a short period, we would have faced the same difficulties as Villarreal.”
The manager added, as quoted by the official UEFA website, that maintaining the same approach had helped Paris Saint-Germain remain competitive despite changing circumstances.
“This is the approach we try to follow,” he said. “If there is one thing the team has shown, it is its ability to remain consistent and win, regardless of injuries or the stadium in which we play.”
Luis Enrique praises Paris Saint-Germain’s pressing
Luis Enrique credited his players’ work in winning the ball high up the pitch for allowing them to establish such a commanding advantage against Villarreal.
Paris Saint-Germain repeatedly recovered possession close to the Spanish side’s goal, creating opportunities before Villarreal could reorganise.
“We were clearly superior because we were fortunate enough to win the ball back close to their goal,” Luis Enrique said.
Despite the scale of the defeat, he finished by expressing his support for Villarreal and sympathy for the position in which the club found itself.
“Villarreal are a team I really like,” he said. “It is a difficult situation, and I feel sorry for them.”
Paris Saint-Germain’s next listed fixture is against Troyes in Ligue 1 on 07 November 2026. Villarreal are scheduled to face Getafe in La Liga on 08 November 2026.
