Barcelona’s injury problems deepened during their Champions League league-phase match against Aston Villa at Camp Nou on Tuesday, with Rodri unable to continue beyond half-time.
The midfielder complained of pain in his right calf and was replaced by Marc Bernal at the interval. According to Spanish newspaper AS, the decision was made by Barcelona’s German manager as a precaution to prevent the problem from worsening.
Rodri’s condition will not be known until he undergoes medical tests on Wednesday. The timing is a concern for Barcelona, with their La Liga meeting with Atletico Madrid scheduled for Sunday, 08 November 2026.
Barcelona have already been dealing with a number of injuries, and Rodri’s withdrawal adds another concern to the squad ahead of the approaching league fixture.
The club’s medical staff will assess the player before determining whether he can take part against Atletico Madrid. No diagnosis has yet been confirmed, and the outcome of Wednesday’s examinations will establish the extent of the problem.
The injury occurred during Barcelona’s fourth match in the league phase of the Champions League. Rodri was taken off after reporting discomfort in his right calf, with Marc Bernal coming on in his place for the second half.
