Bayern Munich’s Atletico stalemate revives 17-year Champions League rarity

Bayern Munich’s match against Atletico Madrid produced a rare statistic on Tuesday as neither side managed a shot on target during a goalless first half in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase.

According to statistics provider Mister Chip, it was the first time Bayern had played a match in any competition without either team recording a shot on target before half-time since their Bundesliga meeting with Augsburg on 9 April 2022. Bayern won that match 1-0.

The statistic had not been seen in a Bayern match in the Champions League for considerably longer.

The previous occasion came on 14 April 2009, when Bayern drew 1-1 with Barcelona in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.

Tuesday’s meeting with Atletico Madrid therefore brought back a record that had been absent from Bayern’s Champions League matches for more than 17 years.
