Barcelona aim to extend English dominance as Aston Villa seek European upset

Barcelona have gone 15 European home matches without defeat against English clubs, leaving Aston Villa facing a difficult task when the sides meet.

According to UEFA Champions League statistics, Barcelona’s unbeaten run consists of 10 wins and five draws. The Catalan club’s last home defeat by English opposition came in the 2006-07 season, when Liverpool won 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

No English side has repeated that result since, meaning Aston Villa will attempt to end a sequence that has stood for almost two decades.

The fixture will not be the first European meeting between the clubs. Barcelona and Aston Villa have faced each other four times across two two-legged ties.

Barcelona prevailed in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup during the 1977-78 season, progressing 4-3 on aggregate. The first leg ended 2-2 away from home before Barcelona secured a 2-1 victory in the return fixture.

Aston Villa gained revenge in the European Super Cup in 1982. Although they lost the first leg at home by a single goal, they overturned the tie with a 3-0 victory in the second match to win 3-1 on aggregate.

Yamal chasing Champions League record

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal is also closing in on an individual milestone in the Champions League.

Yamal has scored 13 goals in the competition before turning 20, matching the record held by France forward Kylian Mbappe. One more goal would put him outright at the top of the list.

Aston Villa’s record in Spain provides further context to the challenge awaiting the English club. They have won only one of their eight European matches in the country, alongside three draws and four defeats.

That sole victory came against Celta Vigo in the first leg of the second round of the UEFA Cup during the 1998-99 season, when Aston Villa won 1-0.

The fixture listings associated with the occasion also show Manchester United against Aston Villa in the Premier League and Atletico de Madrid against Barcelona in La Liga, both dated 08 November 2026.
