Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono left devastated after fatal collision with Tenerife striker

Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono is in a state of shock and deep distress following the death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel after the pair collided during a Spanish second-tier match.

The 25-year-old had closely followed updates on De Miguel’s condition after the incident, according to Spanish radio station Cadena COPE. Owono had also intended to make a personal apology to the player’s family before De Miguel’s death was confirmed on Tuesday morning.

The collision took place during Monday evening’s fixture at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium. Owono came out to challenge De Miguel for the ball and raised his knee during the contest, leaving the Tenerife forward seriously injured.

De Miguel was taken to hospital, but his condition deteriorated and he died at the age of 30.

Footage of the challenge led to widespread criticism of Owono and prompted questions about his potential responsibility. However, Andorra officials said the goalkeeper had not intended to harm De Miguel and that the incident was not deliberate.

Questions remain over whether the collision could lead to sporting or legal consequences. The severity of the challenge and the player’s subsequent death do not, by themselves, establish the goalkeeper’s responsibility. Any decision on accountability would depend on the findings of an investigation, including evidence about the nature of the challenge, whether it breached the laws of the game and whether it was causally linked to De Miguel’s death.

Gerard Pique, the president of FC Andorra and former Barcelona player, paid tribute to the Tenerife striker in an emotional message.

“I am extremely sorry from the bottom of my heart… Rest in peace, Jesus,” he wrote.

Spanish football responded with an outpouring of tributes, while the Royal Spanish Football Federation suspended several Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Tuesday as a mark of respect for De Miguel.

The fixtures listed in connection with the clubs include CD Badajoz against Tenerife in the Copa del Rey on 04 November 2026. In the Spanish second tier, Tenerife are scheduled to play Andorra on 08 November 2026, while Mallorca are also listed in the same fixture information.
