Achraf Hakimi has paid tribute to Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, who has died at the age of 30 after suffering a serious injury during his side’s match against FC Andorra in the Spanish second division.
The Paris St-Germain and Morocco defender posted a message of condolence on social media, writing: “A warm greeting to all his loved ones… May he rest in peace.”
De Miguel was involved in a heavy collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during the closing stages of the match at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium.
Owono had come out to challenge the Tenerife forward for a contested ball, leaving De Miguel with a severe injury. Medical staff attended to him before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The game was suspended with the score level at 2-2.
FC Andorra also expressed its condolences in a statement, saying: “With broken hearts and deep sadness, we offer our sincerest condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, all his team-mates and friends, and Tenerife. Rest in peace.”
Gerard Pique, the former Barcelona player and president of FC Andorra, also shared his grief.
“I am extremely sorry… May Jesus rest in peace,” he wrote.
Media reports said Pique left the stadium shortly after the incident to check on the striker’s condition.
Tenerife confirmed De Miguel’s death at 08:00 on Tuesday. In an official statement, the club said it was experiencing profound sadness and asked for privacy to be respected for the player’s family during the difficult circumstances.
The tragedy also led to the suspension of domestic fixtures in Spain.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina as a mark of respect following De Miguel’s death.
A presentation ceremony for Spain Under-21s’ match against Japan in Almendralejo was also cancelled. New dates for the postponed fixtures will be announced later.
