Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel Almeida has died at the age of 30 after suffering a serious injury during his side’s match against Andorra.
The club announced his death at 08:00 on Tuesday, bringing an end to efforts to save the forward after a collision at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium.
Tenerife said it was “broken with pain” and unable to believe what had happened.
“We are speechless because of the shock, and we cannot believe that this is real,” the club said in a statement, adding that it stood alongside de Miguel’s family, loved ones and supporters.
“There are no words of consolation, and nothing that can ease this feeling of sadness,” Tenerife added. “We stand with his grieving family and loved ones, and with every member of the Tenerife family who are mourning this cruel ending today.”
The collision happened during stoppage time while de Miguel was running from halfway to launch a counter-attack. Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono had left his penalty area in an attempt to intercept the ball when the two players collided.
The goalkeeper’s knee struck de Miguel in the chest and face. The Tenerife forward fell unconscious on the pitch, prompting players from both teams to call immediately for medical assistance.
Medical staff treated him on the field for several minutes before he was carried to an ambulance and taken to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Senora de Candelaria.
De Miguel suffered a cardiac and respiratory arrest. Medical teams performed resuscitation as he was being taken to hospital and managed to restore his pulse, but he remained unconscious and was admitted to intensive care in a critical condition.
During the early hours of Tuesday morning, Tenerife said the player’s neurological condition had deteriorated. The club later confirmed his death.
The forward’s family thanked everyone who had sent messages of support and condolences, while asking for the greatest possible respect for their privacy as they dealt with the loss.
The schedule listed around the incident includes CD Badajoz against Tenerife in the Copa del Rey on 04 November 2026. Tenerife are also listed to play Andorra in Segunda Division on 08 November 2026, followed by a fixture involving Mallorca.
