Gravenberch deletes social-media reaction after Liverpool’s defeat by Arsenal

Ryan Gravenberch has faced criticism from Liverpool supporters after appearing to like a post by Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber celebrating the Gunners’ 1-0 Premier League victory at Anfield.

Timber shared a photograph of himself with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister after Arsenal secured their first win at Liverpool in 14 years. The Netherlands international captioned the image: “Proud of the team! Enjoy this win, Gunners.”

Gravenberch, also from the Netherlands, reacted to the post, prompting an angry response from some Liverpool fans. One user called for disciplinary action against the midfielder, while the like was later removed.

The incident attracted attention because Gravenberch and Timber previously played together at Ajax Amsterdam and remain team-mates with the Netherlands. Their friendship continues despite now representing clubs competing directly in English football.

The timing was particularly difficult for Liverpool, who dropped to fifth in the Premier League with 15 points after recording only four victories in their opening nine matches.

Arsenal’s victory also marked Liverpool’s first home defeat by the London club in 14 years. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the match as Arsenal finished the game top of the table, moving above Manchester City.

Liverpool’s attacking figures added to the frustration around the result. They failed to register a single shot on target despite selecting a high-cost front three of Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola and Alexander Isak.

Gravenberch did not feature during the match, remaining on the substitutes’ bench for the full 90 minutes. Manager Andoni Iraola selected the young Tony Nyoni alongside Mac Allister in midfield instead, despite Gravenberch having started seven matches during the season.

The midfielder’s social-media interaction therefore came as pressure increased on Liverpool and their manager, with the team’s results declining and the conduct of some players becoming a subject of debate among supporters.

Liverpool and Arsenal are also listed among the Champions League fixtures scheduled for 04 November 2026, alongside Fenerbahce and Slavia Prague.
