Real Madrid’s penalty record adds fresh tension to Spanish refereeing debate

Real Madrid have been awarded more penalties than any other club in the history of the Spanish top flight, with the latest figures emerging amid renewed scrutiny of refereeing decisions involving the club.

The statistic came into focus after Real Madrid were awarded a penalty during their meeting with Racing Santander on Sunday. Kylian Mbappe was brought down inside the area, prompting debate over whether the decision was correct.

The spot-kick allowed Real Madrid to take a 1-0 lead, and they went on to win the match 3-0.

According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid have received 601 penalties across their history in the Spanish league. Barcelona are second on 520, while Atletico Madrid are third with 498.

The gap between Real Madrid and their two main rivals is also reflected in the figures for the current century. Real Madrid have been awarded 235 penalties since 2000, compared with 204 for Barcelona.

Athletic Bilbao rank third over the same period, having been awarded 171 penalties.

The figures have been published at a time when Real Madrid’s complaints about refereeing in the Spanish league continue to attract attention. The club has repeatedly raised concerns over individual decisions, arguing on different occasions that certain incidents have affected the outcome of matches.

That stance has contrasted with the historical penalty data, which places Real Madrid clearly ahead of both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the all-time rankings.

The listed schedule includes AEK Athens in the UEFA Champions League on 04 November 2026. Real Madrid are listed to face Malaga in La Liga on 07 November 2026, while Racing Santander also appears in the fixture listings.
