Himad Abdelli’s missed lob leaves Bruno Genesio furious during Marseille win
Himad Abdelli left Bruno Genesio frustrated after wasting a golden opportunity with a poorly executed lob during Marseille’s Ligue 1 victory over Toulouse, but the Algerian midfielder later acknowledged his mistake with a humorous message on social media.
Marseille continued their impressive run of form by recording a third consecutive league victory against Toulouse on Sunday. However, Abdelli’s missed chance became one of the talking points of the match after his attempt to beat the opposition goalkeeper caught the attention of his coach.
The Algerian midfielder, who has been influential in Marseille’s recent performances, found himself in a promising position after being played through on goal. With the Toulouse goalkeeper in front of him, Abdelli attempted to lift the ball over the advancing shot-stopper in an effort to break the deadlock.
His execution, however, fell short of expectations as the ball sailed comfortably over the crossbar. It was a significant opportunity for Marseille to take advantage of, but the midfielder failed to make the most of the situation.
The missed effort was particularly frustrating for Bruno Genesio, who was visibly unhappy with the decision from the touchline. The Marseille coach reacted immediately from the bench, expressing his disappointment through animated gestures as he watched the opportunity go begging.
Genesio’s reaction reflected his frustration at seeing such a promising attacking situation wasted, especially with Abdelli having the chance to produce a better finish.
Despite the incident, the midfielder did not shy away from acknowledging his mistake after the final whistle. Rather than ignore the missed opportunity, Abdelli addressed it himself while celebrating Marseille’s latest success on social media.
Sharing a message following the victory, the Algerian international wrote: “Vaaamos +3, PS: sorry for the lob .”
His response added a humorous touch to the incident, showing that he was aware of the poor execution and willing to make light of it.
For Abdelli, the missed lob did little to take away from Marseille’s overall achievement. The French side secured another three points to extend their winning run to three consecutive Ligue 1 matches.
The midfielder also continues to be regarded as one of Marseille’s influential performers in recent games, despite the moment he would probably prefer to forget against Toulouse.
