Ousmane Diao provides assist as Midtjylland complete comeback win over Nordsjælland
Senegalese defender Ousmane Diao played a key role as FC Midtjylland recovered from a two-goal deficit to beat Nordsjælland 3-2 in a dramatic Danish league encounter on Sunday.
Diao provided the assist for the equalising goal as Midtjylland overturned a 2-0 half-time deficit before Sofus Johannesen scored a stoppage-time winner to complete the comeback in the 13th round of the competition.
Nordsjælland looked firmly in control after making a bright start to the contest. Justin Janssen opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Ibrahim Adel doubled their advantage in the 34th minute.
The hosts took their two-goal lead into the break, leaving Midtjylland with plenty of work to do in the second half.
However, the visitors returned with a different approach after the interval and began their fightback in the 66th minute when Tobias Salquist inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
The goal gave Midtjylland renewed belief, and they continued pushing for an equaliser.
Their efforts paid off eight minutes later, with Diao making an important contribution. The Senegalese defender delivered the assist for Kjell Wätjen, who found the back of the net in the 74th minute to bring the visitors level at 2-2.
With the contest heading towards a draw, Midtjylland continued searching for a decisive goal and eventually found it deep into stoppage time.
Sofus Johannesen struck in the 90th minute plus five to complete the turnaround and hand the visitors all three points in an entertaining encounter.
For Diao, the assist was another important contribution in a match that required Midtjylland to show character after falling behind by two goals.
Meanwhile, Senegalese youngster Mamadou Lamine Sadio featured for Nordsjælland, starting the encounter before making way in the 69th minute for Hjalte Rasmussen.
The defeat was a disappointing outcome for Nordsjælland after they had established a comfortable advantage in the first half but failed to maintain their lead.
Midtjylland, on the other hand, will take considerable confidence from the result as they continue their push towards the top of the Danish league standings.
The comeback victory also highlighted the importance of Diao’s contribution, with the Senegalese defender playing a direct role in his side’s return to the contest.
