Nabil Bentaleb stars in Lille's victory over Lens

Nabil Bentaleb played a decisive role in Lille’s 1-0 victory over Lens in the northern derby, setting up Olivier Giroud’s late winner with a powerful effort that led to the decisive goal.

The Algerian midfielder delivered an impressive performance at the heart of Lille’s midfield on Friday, 30 October, as the two sides met in the ninth round of Ligue 1. Although Giroud took the headlines for scoring the winner, Bentaleb was instrumental in creating the opportunity that settled the contest.

With Lille struggling to find a breakthrough against a well-organised Lens defence, Bentaleb stepped forward in the closing stages to change the course of the match.

The 31-year-old collected the ball approximately 25 metres from goal before unleashing a powerful left-footed effort towards the target. Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser managed to get a hand to the shot but could only push it into the path of Giroud, who reacted quickly to send the rebound into the net.

Bentaleb was not officially credited with an assist, but his effort was the starting point of the move that secured all three points for Lille. His contribution proved particularly important in a closely contested derby where clear opportunities had been difficult to create.

The midfielder started the match and remained on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes, playing an important role in both Lille’s attacking and defensive phases.

His passing statistics reflected his influence on the game. Bentaleb completed 59 of his 69 attempted passes, recording an accuracy rate of 85.5%. He also registered three key passes, demonstrating his ability to find teammates in dangerous positions and help Lille maintain control of possession.

Beyond his work with the ball, the Algeria international also made a significant contribution defensively. He recorded four interceptions, made one tackle and won four of his five duels. He was particularly effective in the air, winning both of his aerial contests.

Bentaleb also completed his only attempted dribble, further highlighting an all-round display that helped Lille secure an important result against their local rivals.

The victory strengthens Lille’s position in the Ligue 1 title race, with the club moving to second place on 18 points after nine matches.

They now sit two points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain, with Giroud’s late strike ensuring that Lille maintained their position among the leading sides in the French top flight.
