West Ham midfielder Mohamadou Kanté earns maiden Mali call-up for Rwanda double-header
West Ham United midfielder Mohamadou Kanté has received his first senior international call-up after being named in Mali’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Rwanda.
The 21-year-old has been included by head coach Anthony Da Silva for the two crucial encounters, officially confirming his decision to represent Mali at international level after weeks of speculation surrounding his international future.
Kanté’s inclusion marks an important milestone in his young career as he prepares for the possibility of making his senior debut for the West African nation during the November international break.
Born in Paris to a family with Senegalese roots, the midfielder was also eligible to represent other countries but has ultimately opted to commit his international future to Mali.
His maiden invitation comes on the back of encouraging performances in English football, where he has been making an impression with West Ham.
Kanté has registered three goals and two assists in 12 Championship appearances this season, demonstrating his attacking contribution and growing influence in midfield.
His performances have attracted attention, with Mali now moving to secure his services as they strengthen their squad for the ongoing AFCON qualifying campaign.
The young midfielder will be hoping to translate his club form to the international stage as he looks to establish himself within Da Silva’s plans.
Mali currently have six points from their opening two qualifying matches, having recorded victories over Cape Verde and Liberia to occupy second position in Group K, level on points with Rwanda.
The upcoming double-header therefore presents an important opportunity for the Eagles to strengthen their position in the qualification race.
Mali will host Rwanda on November 13 before travelling to Kigali for the return encounter on November 17, with both matches counting towards matchdays three and four of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
For Kanté, the two fixtures could mark the beginning of an exciting international journey as he prepares to make his first appearance in Mali colours.
