Morocco international Ismael Saibari has left hospital after undergoing successful surgery on a serious right-ankle injury sustained during Bayern Munich’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
The Bayern player posted a photograph of himself smiling from his hospital bed on Instagram, alongside the message: “The operation was successful! It’s time to return to training. See you on the pitch as soon as possible.”
Saibari was injured in the 24th minute of Saturday’s match after twisting his right ankle while attempting to reach a loose ball in a challenge with Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Bayern Munich confirmed the diagnosis about 16 hours after the incident. The club said Saibari had suffered a tear to the ligament connecting the tibia and fibula, which helps stabilise the upper part of the ankle joint.
German newspaper Bild reported that Saibari is expected to require at least three months of rehabilitation.
The injury is another setback for Bayern, with Serge Gnabry also forced off during the match against Dortmund. Gnabry left the field in the 31st minute with an injury to his left hamstring and is expected to be unavailable for between four and six weeks, according to Bild.
Bayern’s injury problems come as they prepare to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, 03 November 2026.
The German club will be without several important attacking players for the game. Saibari, Gnabry, Luis Diaz and Jamal Musiala are all absent, while Michael Olise’s fitness remains uncertain after he ended the Dortmund match with pain in his right knee.
Bayern will be led by interim manager Aaron Danks, who has taken charge while Vincent Kompany is unavailable because of meningitis.
The match against Atletico Madrid will be played in the Champions League as Bayern attempt to manage a growing list of injuries following the Dortmund fixture.
