Saibari, Gnabry and Olise injured as Bayern Munich are held by Dortmund

Bayern Munich suffered a triple injury setback during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena in the eighth round of the Bundesliga.

Morocco international Ismael Saibari, Germany forward Serge Gnabry and France winger Michael Olise were all forced to leave the field after picking up injuries during the match.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the problems affecting Saibari and Gnabry appeared more serious than initially expected.

“The two injuries Saibari’s and Gnabry’s are slightly more serious than we expected,” Eberl told German newspaper Abendzeitung.

He offered a more positive assessment of Olise’s condition, although the club is still waiting for medical examinations to establish the extent of all three injuries.

“With Michael Olise, it does not seem to be quite as bad, but the examinations are still pending,” Eberl added.

Video footage after the final whistle showed Saibari leaving the Allianz Arena on crutches. Olise, by contrast, was seen departing the stadium normally.

Bayern assistant manager Aaron Danks provided further details on the injuries, saying Saibari had suffered an ankle problem while Gnabry had sustained a muscular injury.

“Saibari’s injury was to his ankle and it appears to be fairly serious,” Danks said. “Gnabry suffered a muscular injury, and I am also not sure about Michael’s condition in the final minutes. The medical team will now play an extremely important role in helping all the players recover.”

The draw ended with Bayern having to settle for a point despite a strong second-half display. Danks said the team’s performance had been encouraging, even though the result was disappointing.

“We have mixed feelings,” he said. “We are very happy with the performance, especially in the second half. I think we had good control of the game.”

Danks acknowledged before the match that Borussia Dortmund had a particularly strong defensive record, but felt Bayern had managed to create a number of opportunities.

“As we discussed before the game, the opponent has an extremely strong defensive record, but today we succeeded in finding many different ways to create chances,” he said.

However, Bayern were unable to turn those opportunities into a winning goal.

“In the end, we are disappointed not to have won, but I have to analyse the match for the players and explain that the performance was there and they did everything correctly,” Danks said.

“We had the right moments, but things did not go in our favour today.”
