Barcelona take action to avert wider sanctions over Camp Nou conduct

Barcelona have suspended access to the Gol 1957 stand for their match against Deportivo Alaves after being warned that repeated incidents there could ultimately lead to the Camp Nou being closed.

The club’s board approved the measure yesterday, prompting anger among the supporter groups based in the stand. They argue the entire section is being punished for an incident involving one fan, who waved a flag in the face of Real Madrid player Eduardo Camavinga.

However, information disclosed by Barcelona on Friday indicates the decision was intended as a preventative measure rather than a response to that incident alone. The club has been told that a series of previous disturbances connected with the stand could result in disciplinary authorities ordering a full stadium closure.

Complaints raise pressure on Barcelona

According to sources at Barcelona quoted by Mundo Deportivo, La Liga has submitted a succession of complaints against the club. Those cases have been passed to the disciplinary committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

The complaints relate to offensive chants, insults and other incidents reported in the Gol 1957 stand during matches involving Barcelona and Real Madrid, Getafe, Racing Santander and Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona’s fixture list shows the club facing Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026, before Real Madrid play Racing Santander in La Liga on 01 November 2026.

The club now faces the prospect of mounting financial penalties as well as the possibility of losing the use of the Camp Nou. A stadium closure would remove revenue from official home matches and prevent head coach Hansi Flick’s team from receiving home support during the most important part of the season.

Barcelona therefore decided to take firm action to demonstrate that it intends to stop the behaviour. The club believes the incidents are no longer isolated events, but a recurring pattern that has increased concern at both La Liga and the Spanish federation.

Talks planned with supporters

The suspension is not intended to end the relationship between Barcelona and the groups that occupy the stand. Club officials are due to meet representatives of the supporters’ groups on Monday, with the aim of securing a firm commitment that the incidents will not happen again.

If an agreement is reached, Barcelona plan to reopen the Gol 1957 stand for the team’s important match against Aston Villa on Tuesday.

The club is hoping that dialogue can resolve the dispute before the disciplinary process results in the more serious punishment of closing the Camp Nou.
