Fernando Torres urges Lamine Yamal to enjoy football amid Messi comparisons

Former Spain striker Fernando Torres has praised Lamine Yamal’s extraordinary potential, urging the Barcelona youngster to enjoy his football rather than become overwhelmed by the expectations surrounding his rapid rise.

Speaking on Onda Cero’s Radioestadio Noche, Torres admitted that he had rarely seen a young player with the kind of potential demonstrated by the 19-year-old Barcelona winger.

“The impact Lamine has had on world football is very different from what I experienced,” Torres said.

“I would tell him to enjoy what he does best, which is playing football. I do not remember seeing potential like this in a long time.”

Torres understands the demands of becoming a football star at a young age, having broken into Atletico Madrid’s first team as a teenager before establishing himself as one of Spain’s leading forwards.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker was also asked about comparisons between Yamal and Lionel Messi but insisted that the Argentine remains in a league of his own.

“I do not remember Messi at his age. For me, he is the greatest of all time. I do not think we will see anything even remotely similar,” he added.

Torres believes Yamal’s achievements should be appreciated without placing unnecessary pressure on him through constant comparisons with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

The Barcelona academy graduate made his senior debut at just 15 and quickly established himself as one of the most important players in Hansi Flick’s team.

His performances for Barcelona and Spain have already earned him widespread recognition, with many considering him among the most exciting talents in world football.

Torres’ message is therefore clear: Yamal should continue enjoying the game, developing his abilities and building his own legacy rather than trying to replicate another player’s career.
