Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nnamdi Collins is facing increased competition for a starting place after struggling to reproduce his best form, but head coach Adi Hutter has insisted that he will not give up on the 22-year-old.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with Hamburger SV, Hütter acknowledged that the Germany Under-21 international has not been performing at his full potential in recent weeks.
“Basically, Collins can certainly play better football,” the Frankfurt coach explained.
However, Hütter was quick to defend the defender’s commitment, insisting that his attitude and willingness to work have never been in question.
“I still see every day in training and also in matches that he wants to give his best.”
The Austrian added that he could not fault Collins’ effort, even though things have not been going his way on the pitch.
“I cannot blame him at all for his commitment and efforts.”
Hütter also made it clear that Collins remains part of his plans, although his involvement against Hamburg is yet to be decided.
“I am not someone who will simply drop him,” the coach stressed.
Collins’ situation has become more challenging following the impressive performances of defensive alternatives Elias Baum and Keita Kosugi.
Hütter praised Baum’s recent development, expressing satisfaction with the young defender’s progress.
He also acknowledged Kosugi’s contribution after coming off the bench, noting that the Japanese defender had performed well when given the opportunity.
With both players making positive impressions, Collins faces increased competition for regular minutes.
Nevertheless, Hütter believes the defender is experiencing a difficult period rather than a permanent decline in his performances.
“Sometimes there are phases when you are not in such good form.”
Collins will now hope to rediscover his confidence and convince the coaching staff that he deserves a regular place in Frankfurt’s starting lineup as they prepare to face Hamburg.
