Jordan Torunarigha returns to Hamburger SV squad for Frankfurt clash
Hamburger SV have received a boost ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga away fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt, with Jordan Torunarigha returning to the squad after recovering from muscular problems.
The 29-year-old centre-back missed Hamburg’s recent Bundesliga encounter against SC Paderborn and Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal meeting with Frankfurt because of his injury.
However, head coach Merlin Polzin confirmed on Friday that the defender has recovered sufficiently to be included in the travelling squad for the return fixture.
“Jordan is coming back and will be part of the squad,” Polzin announced during his press conference.
The HSV manager also welcomed the defender’s availability, particularly given the club’s ongoing injury problems.
“In this situation, that is very good news for us,” he added.
Although Torunarigha’s return provides additional defensive cover, Polzin declined to confirm whether the Nigerian-born German defender would immediately reclaim his place in the starting lineup.
Instead, the coach expressed confidence in the players who featured during Tuesday’s cup encounter, insisting that their performance demonstrated the strength of the available squad.
“The game showed why we have so much confidence in the squad.”
Torunarigha’s return comes at an important time for Hamburg, who are looking to respond after their 3-1 DFB-Pokal defeat against Frankfurt earlier this week.
His availability gives Polzin another experienced option in central defence as the Rothosen prepare for Sunday’s rematch at Deutsche Bank Park.
