Mothobi Mvala to stay at Mamelodi Sundowns

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly working towards securing a contract extension for experienced defender Mothobi Mvala as the club moves to retain one of its most influential figures.

The 31-year-old centre-back has been an important member of the Brazilians since joining the club in 2020, establishing himself as a dependable defensive option and forming a formidable partnership with Grant Kekana at the heart of the backline.

Despite his importance to the team, Mvala has endured a difficult period following a serious knee injury that required major surgery, forcing him to spend an extended period on the sidelines.

The injury also ruled him out of the final stages of the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup, disrupting his progress at both club and international levels.

His recovery has been gradual, with the defender managing just two appearances for Sundowns this season as he continues his efforts to regain full fitness.

However, his prolonged absence has not diminished the club’s confidence in his abilities, with the Sundowns hierarchy reportedly viewing his experience, leadership qualities and influence in the dressing room as valuable assets.

With his current contract due to expire in June, the Pretoria-based outfit are keen to reach an agreement over fresh terms to ensure the veteran defender remains part of their long-term plans.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso has also provided an encouraging update on Mvala’s recovery, confirming that the defender has resumed training with the squad but still requires time to regain his previous level of performance.

“Mothobi is training with the team, but not for very long yet. Considering the long-term injury he suffered, it is not only about his return to training, but also his return to peak form,” Cardoso said.

The Portuguese tactician’s comments suggest that Sundowns are taking a cautious approach to the defender’s rehabilitation, with the priority being to ensure he returns to full competitive fitness rather than rushing him back into action.

Mvala’s experience and understanding of the club’s demands could prove crucial as Sundowns continue to compete for domestic and continental honours.

Since arriving at Chloorkop in 2020, the defender has made 119 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.

His potential contract extension would underline Sundowns’ desire to retain experienced players who have played significant roles in the club’s recent success, despite the challenges posed by long-term injuries.
