IFK Goteborg teenager Oliver Mansson attracts European interest as Barcelona remains his ambition

Oliver Mansson has emerged as one of Scandinavian football’s leading young prospects, with Manchester United, Roma, Freiburg, Leicester City and Watford sending scouts to watch the 17-year-old IFK Goteborg midfielder.

The clubs were represented during IFK Goteborg’s 1-1 draw with Djurgardens, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, as interest continues to grow in a player who has impressed in the Swedish league.

“It is very enjoyable to have these clubs here,” Mansson told the newspaper. “If they have come to watch me, it means I am doing things correctly, but I am focusing on the present.”

Despite attracting attention from several clubs, Mansson has made no secret of his long-term preference for Barcelona. In an earlier interview, he said: “For me, it has always been Barcelona.”

He added that Barcelona is also his family’s favourite club. When asked whether he expected to receive a call from the Catalan side, Mansson replied with a laugh: “Yes, exactly.”

No formal offer has been made for the midfielder, but his potential is already being reflected in the expectations of IFK Goteborg’s management.

According to the report, the club’s sporting director, Jesper Jansson, believes a future transfer could exceed about €9m. That is the fee Brighton paid to sign Malick Yalcouye in 2024, which currently stands as IFK Goteborg’s record sale.

Barcelona, however, is not among the clubs reported in Sweden to have sent scouts to assess Mansson. The player’s wish remains clear, with a move to the Spanish club an aspiration for the future.

Included among world’s leading young talents

Mansson has also received international recognition after being named by British newspaper The Guardian among its list of the world’s 60 leading young talents born in 2009.

The Sweden youth international can operate as a defensive midfielder or in a deeper holding role. His qualities include tactical intelligence, passing ability and an understanding of the game, while he has also impressed with his character and willingness to take responsibility despite his age.

Mansson joined IFK Goteborg’s first-team squad in March 2026 and is under contract with the club until 2028.

For now, the teenager is concentrating on his development in Sweden while clubs from across Europe continue to monitor his progress. Although Barcelona has not yet been linked with a scouting visit, Mansson has already identified the club he hopes to join one day.
