Former Nigeria international Peter Osaze Odemwingie has named Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time, placing the former Chelsea midfielder ahead of several legendary figures in Ghanaian football.

During a TikTok live session, Odemwingie was asked by Bryt FM to identify the greatest Ghanaian player in history, where he singled out Essien for his outstanding qualities.

Meanwhile, the former Stoke City star acknowledged the contributions of other prominent Black Stars players including Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan and the Ayew brothers.

However, he ultimately settled on Essien, citing the midfielder’s ability to combine defensive responsibilities with an impressive goal-scoring threat.

“Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari — they were all great players. The Ayew brothers, of course, and Asamoah Gyan as well. But I would give it to Essien because he was a defensive midfielder who could also score goals. So, I would choose him,” Odemwingie said.

Essien enjoyed an illustrious playing career, representing several leading European clubs, including Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan. He established himself as one of the most accomplished Ghanaian midfielders of his generation, earning recognition for his strength, tactical intelligence, work rate and ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch.

At Chelsea, the former Black Stars star won multiple major honours, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, further cementing his reputation in European football.

Essien has since transitioned into coaching and is currently serving as an assistant coach at FC Nordsjælland in Denmark, continuing his involvement in the game after bringing his playing career to a close.

Odemwingie’s choice highlights the high regard in which Essien is held beyond Ghana, particularly among players who experienced the fierce football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria during their careers.

While Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah remain iconic figures from earlier generations, Muntari, Gyan and the Ayew brothers also played important roles in shaping the Black Stars’ fortunes over the years.

Nevertheless, Odemwingie believes Essien’s combination of defensive discipline and attacking contribution sets him apart, making the former Chelsea star his personal choice as Ghana’s greatest footballer of all time.
