Carles Martinez pleased with Victor Boniface after Leverkusen’s comeback win
Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has received encouraging words from head coach Carles Martinez after making a late appearance in the club’s 5-2 victory over FC Nürnberg in the DFB-Pokal.
The 25-year-old Nigerian forward came off the bench in the 87th minute of Wednesday’s second-round encounter, replacing Jonas Hofmann as Leverkusen completed an impressive comeback to secure their place in the next round.
Boniface’s appearance offered another opportunity to build match fitness as he looks to establish himself in Martinez’s plans following a difficult period affected by injuries and limited playing time.
Speaking after the match, the Leverkusen manager expressed happiness at seeing the striker back on the pitch, acknowledging his desire to contribute more regularly.
“I’m happy for him because I know he wanted to play and be important,” Martínez said.
The coach was also satisfied with what Boniface produced during his brief time on the field.
“He was good in those minutes.”
Boniface continues to fight for opportunities
Martínez stopped short of confirming whether Boniface’s limited playing time reflected his current level, explaining instead that the striker’s opportunities would depend on the circumstances of individual matches.
The coach also emphasised the importance of having the entire squad ready as Leverkusen prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.
“We will need everyone,” Martinez stressed.
Boniface will now hope his latest appearance helps him earn additional minutes, although it remains uncertain whether he will feature more prominently in Saturday’s Bundesliga meeting with VfB Stuttgart.
For the Nigerian international, the immediate priority is to continue working hard in training and demonstrate that he can contribute consistently when called upon.
Leverkusen’s comeback against Nürnberg provided a positive result for the team, while Boniface’s late involvement offered a small but encouraging step in his efforts to regain a more prominent role under Martínez.
