Senegal defender Ismail Jakobs announces international football retirement
Senegal defender Ismail Jakobs has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his chapter with the Lions of Teranga to an end after earning 33 caps for the national team.
The 27-year-old left-back confirmed his decision in a post on Instagram, putting an end to speculation surrounding his international future following his absence from Senegal’s most recent squad.
Jakobs’ omission during the last international break had raised questions about his continued involvement with the national team. Senegal coach Patrick Vieira had previously suggested that the defender was expected to return to the squad during the next FIFA international window.
However, the former Senegal international has now opted to step away from international football, choosing instead to concentrate on his club career and family commitments.
In his farewell message, Jakobs reflected on his journey with Senegal, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent the country and describing how the experience had shaped him both as a footballer and as a person.
“I joined the national team as a young boy, and I’m leaving it as a man. Senegal welcomed me with open arms. I’ve always given 100 per cent for our country. Today, it’s time to start a new chapter and focus on my club career and my family. Jerejef for everything,” he wrote.
Jakobs’ decision marks the end of a significant chapter in his career, having represented Senegal on 33 occasions since making his international breakthrough.
His departure will bring an end to his contribution to the Lions of Teranga, with the defender now looking to channel his energy into his club commitments while spending more time with his family.
For Senegal, the retirement means losing an experienced option at left-back as the team continues to prepare for upcoming international assignments.
Jakobs will now turn his full attention to club football, having expressed appreciation for the support he received throughout his time representing the West African nation.
