Liverpool edge past Chelsea on penalties as Iraola hails ‘even’ League Cup tie

Liverpool reached the quarter-finals of the English League Cup after overcoming Chelsea 6-5 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said the contest had been closely fought, with neither side creating many clear opportunities. He also praised his players for securing a third successive home victory.

“It was an even match, and there were not many chances for either team,” Iraola told Sky Sports. “I am extremely pleased with the players’ performance.”

Cody Gakpo scored Liverpool’s goal, while Chelsea’s equaliser came from Morgan Rogers. The tie remained level at the end of normal time before Liverpool prevailed in the shootout.

Iraola was particularly encouraged by the contribution of Liverpool’s younger players, saying they had shown they were capable of competing at a high level.

“The young players performed very well and they have a high level,” he said. “We trust them because they have proved that they are at an excellent standard.”

The manager also highlighted the progress made by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who made several saves during the match.

“Giorgi Mamardashvili has improved a lot in dealing with many shots,” Iraola added. “Winning three consecutive matches at home is extremely important.”

Iraola said the knockout format of the competition could provide valuable experience for players who were still developing.

“I believe taking part in a competition based on knockout matches gives the players additional experience,” he said.

Liverpool’s victory continued Chelsea’s difficult record against them in the English League Cup. Chelsea have now been eliminated by Liverpool six times in the competition, more than by any other team in the tournament’s history.

Iraola said the current run at home was especially significant after Liverpool had previously struggled in league matches at their own ground.

“We had been suffering in our home matches in the league before, but now we are looking forward to facing Arsenal on Sunday,” he said.

Liverpool will face Bournemouth in the quarter-finals, in what is being described as the strongest tie of that stage.
