Barcelona impressed by Hamza Abdelkarim’s attitude as Egypt striker adapts to new role
Barcelona have been impressed by Hamza Abdelkarim’s professionalism and humility as the 18-year-old adjusts to life between the first team and Barca Atletic, according to Catalan newspaper Sport.
The Egypt striker has accepted that his opportunities may currently be limited with Hansi Flick’s senior side, while also remaining willing to strengthen the reserve team when required.
Sport described that attitude as a sign of Abdelkarim’s maturity, particularly given the attention he has received in Egypt after representing his country at the World Cup.
“It is not easy for a player of this age to deal with a similar situation, especially as the Egyptian forward has gained widespread fame in his country after taking part in the World Cup,” the newspaper reported.
“However, Hamza has shown considerable humility and awareness, both in accepting his limited appearances with the first team and in his willingness to play for Barcelona Atletic under Juliano Belletti when asked.”
Abdelkarim took part in Barcelona’s training session on Wednesday as the squad returned to work following painful defeats by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. He had been an unused substitute for both matches.
His most recent appearance came on 17 October, when he played his only match so far for Barca Atletic. Abdelkarim scored from the penalty spot to give his side the lead against Utebo in a game they went on to win 2-1 at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.
After extending his contract until 2030, Abdelkarim said his priority was to secure playing time, regardless of whether that came with the first team or the reserves. He also stressed that he did not want to put himself in an embarrassing position.
According to Sport, that approach reflects a player who values opportunities to play and develop above questions of status. Regular football is also expected to help him adapt more quickly to Barcelona’s style, which differs from the football he experienced before moving to Catalonia.
Flick pleased with Abdelkarim’s integration
Barcelona’s appreciation of Abdelkarim extends beyond his footballing ability. He has also settled smoothly into the first-team dressing room.
Although he hopes to compete for a place among the world’s leading players, the forward remains modest and avoids arrogance. Despite being quiet and naturally shy, he joins his team-mates in moments of humour and relaxation.
He displays the same attitude when he links up with the reserve side and does not behave as though he is above his team-mates or his role within the group.
Flick is pleased with Abdelkarim’s conduct in the dressing room and his work in training, although the German coach is currently relying on other, more established options in attack.
Barcelona face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on Saturday at 21:00 Spain time. Barca Atletic play Areno at 18:00 at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.
Whichever team Abdelkarim represents, his immediate objective remains the same: to gain minutes and use every opportunity to demonstrate his ability, Sport said.
