TS Galaxy interim coach Esau Mtsweni says Seluleko Mahlambi remains focused on the club despite reported interest from Kaizer Chiefs and a difficult performance against them in the Carling Knockout.
The Rockets were beaten 3-0 by Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Tuesday in the Last 16, with Wandile Duba scoring all three goals.
Mahlambi, who has been linked with a move to the Soweto club, struggled to make an impact during the defeat. The 22-year-old was reported to have attracted Chiefs’ interest during the recent transfer window.
Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi previously told Metro FM that Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr. had made a formal R4 million offer for the winger. Talks broke down after Chiefs declined to increase their valuation, while Sukazi maintained that Mahlambi was worth R10 million and above.
Mtsweni said he had spoken to the player and believed his attention remained with TS Galaxy.
“As far as I know with Mahlambi, he is okay. He is focused, and he wants to be here,” Mtsweni told journalists after the match.
“He’s always giving his best.
“As for offers and stuff, I wouldn’t know much, but as far as I know, with Mahlambi, the mind is here. I spoke to him, he said he wants to be here until whatever happens will happen.”
Mtsweni acknowledged that Mahlambi had not contributed enough against Chiefs, but rejected the suggestion that comments surrounding his possible transfer had affected the winger.
“He’s a very good player; it’s just that maybe today he didn’t give us much, just like everyone else. I don’t think it could be about what was said on the radio,” he added.
The cup exit leaves Galaxy needing to respond quickly in the Betway Premiership, where they are aiming to improve an underwhelming campaign.
Their next opportunity comes on Saturday, when they travel to face Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. The match is scheduled to kick off at 18:00.
