Romero targets Atletico de Madrid glory to secure place in club history

Christian Romero says winning a trophy with Atletico de Madrid is the only way he can leave a lasting mark on the club’s history.

The defender joined Atletico de Madrid two months ago and has made success with his new team his central ambition. The Spanish side are preparing to face Levante on Saturday in the 11th round of La Liga.

“Since arriving two months ago, I have tried to convey the message that we must compete with maximum intensity in every match,” Romero told Mundo Deportivo.

“And why shouldn’t we win a title with the club by the end of the season? That would be a historic achievement for the team.”

Romero said his personal objective was closely linked to the club’s pursuit of silverware, insisting that trophies were crucial to earning a place in Atletico de Madrid’s history.

“My dream is to win something with Atletico, because I feel the only way to have my name engraved in the history of this club is by winning a title,” he said.

“Many players have passed through this club, and I believe the only way people remember you is by producing outstanding performances and winning one of the competitions.

“I will try to achieve that until the last day I am here.”

The Argentina international also said the squad’s shared aim was to deliver a trophy, with that ambition forming a key part of the message being communicated among the players.

“Our objective is to achieve something with the club, and that is the message we will carry into the dressing room,” he said.

Romero added that Atletico’s players were approaching every fixture with the same level of focus as they seek to challenge for honours.

“We have a great and cohesive group, we deal with things humbly, and we play every match as if it were a final because we want to win a title with the club,” he said.

The defender is preparing to return to action after suffering an injury against Espanyol two rounds ago, in the ninth round of La Liga.

Atletico de Madrid go into their meeting with Levante second in the La Liga table on 25 points. They trail leaders Barcelona by two points.
