Former Zamalek midfielder Ayman Younes laments difficult CAF Champions League draw
Former Zamalek star Ayman Younes has described the club’s CAF Champions League draw as a difficult challenge, warning that the White Knights face a demanding campaign against strong opposition.
Speaking on ON Sport, Younes expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the draw, pointing out that Zamalek have been paired with three formidable teams who are champions of their respective domestic leagues.
“I don’t know who looked at us in the draw. We were drawn with teams that are all league champions in their countries, three strong teams,” he said.
The former Egyptian international stressed that the quality of the opposition makes the competition particularly challenging, noting that the teams involved also command significant support in their respective countries.
“All the matches have a popular and public character, and I wished that we would be drawn against a newly formed team, but unfortunately we were drawn against teams that enjoy great popularity in their countries,” Younes added.
He described the draw as a major test for Zamalek, insisting that the coaching staff and players must carefully prepare for every encounter if they are to progress successfully in the competition.
Turning his attention to Zamalek’s Egyptian Premier League clash against Al Mokawloon Al Arab, Younes said head coach Moataz Gamal faces a difficult assignment and must identify and exploit the opposition’s defensive shortcomings.
“The draw is a very difficult test, and all the matches are tough, and I think it took a lot of thought and consideration from Moataz Gamal and the players before today’s match,” he stated.
Younes also highlighted Al Mokawloon’s difficulties when recovering defensively, urging Zamalek to take advantage of those weaknesses to improve their chances of securing victory.
“The match is difficult for Moataz Gamal, and he needs to work on the weaknesses of Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab, especially since the team is suffering in defensive recovery,” he said.
With pressure mounting on Zamalek to deliver results both domestically and on the continental stage, Younes believes the team must respond positively and demonstrate the quality needed to overcome its challenges.
Meanwhile, Younes has raised concerns as to whether the White Knights could rise above the pressure surrounding the club, silence the growing concerns and secure victory against Al Mokawloon Al Arab.
