Al Ahly handed tricky Confederation Cup draw

Egyptian side Al Ahly have been paired in Group A of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage following the draw in Cairo on Wednesday.

The record CAF Champions League holders will face Moroccan giants Raj AC, Togo’s ASKO de Kara and CD 1º de Agosto from Angola in a high-stakes group.

The draw has set up an interesting contest among four clubs from different footballing backgrounds, with each side hoping to secure a place in the knockout stages of Africa’s second-tier club competition.

Al Ahly will be aiming to make a strong impression in the group as they prepare to navigate a challenging schedule against opponents determined to establish themselves on the continental stage.

Their meeting with Raja CA is expected to attract particular attention, with the Moroccan outfit bringing considerable experience in African club competitions. Both sides will be eager to demonstrate their quality and strengthen their chances of progressing to the next round.

ASKO de Kara will represent Togo in the group and will be looking to compete strongly against their more widely recognised opponents. The Togolese side will need consistency and discipline to collect valuable points throughout the six-match group-stage campaign.

Meanwhile, Angola’s CD 1º de Agosto will also be determined to make their presence felt. The club will view the competition as an opportunity to test themselves against established opposition and pursue a place in the knockout rounds.

With four teams competing for qualification, every match could prove decisive in determining the final standings. A positive start will be particularly important as the clubs seek to build momentum before the later rounds.

The group stage will begin between November 27 and 29, 2026, with the second round scheduled for December 4–6. Matchday three will take place from December 18–20 before the competition resumes in January.

The fourth round is scheduled for January 8–10, followed by the fifth round from January 15–17. The group stage will conclude between January 22 and 24, 2027.

All four clubs will be targeting strong performances as they pursue a place in the knockout stages and keep their hopes of lifting the CAF Confederation Cup alive.
