AS FAR, Al Ahly Tripoli headline star-studded 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup Group B
Morocco’s AS FAR and Libya’s Al Ahly Tripoli will headline a competitive Group B in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup after the official group-stage draw was conducted in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday.
The two North African clubs have been drawn alongside Tanzania’s Azam FC and South African debutants Durban City, setting up a contest featuring established continental pedigree and teams eager to make their mark on the competition.
AS FAR enter the group as the top seed, but Al Ahly Tripoli’s impressive qualifying campaign and the ambitions of Azam FC and Durban City mean the Moroccans cannot afford to take their opponents lightly.
AS FAR face North African challenge
AS FAR will carry the responsibility of leading Group B after being drawn from Pot 1, but their route to the quarter-finals will require consistency against three determined opponents.
The Moroccan side’s continental experience makes them a significant presence in the group, although they face a stern examination from Al Ahly Tripoli, who arrive after an emphatic performance in the preliminary rounds.
The Libyan club secured their place in the group stage by dismantling Ethiopia’s Welwalo Adigrat 8-1 on aggregate in the second preliminary round.
That commanding victory underlined their attacking potential and offered an early indication of the threat they could pose to their Group B rivals.
Al Ahly Tripoli will now look to carry that scoring form into the group stage as they attempt to challenge AS FAR for a place in the knockout rounds.
With both North African sides boasting continental experience, their meetings could prove crucial in determining the final standings.
Azam FC, Durban City target upsets
Tanzania’s Azam FC will also be determined to make their presence felt after navigating a difficult qualifying tie against Egyptian opposition.
Azam secured their group-stage ticket with a 2-1 aggregate victory over ZED FC, demonstrating their ability to negotiate a closely contested tie against technically accomplished opponents.
The Tanzanian club will hope that resilience serves them well as they prepare to face more experienced continental competitors in Group B.
Durban City, meanwhile, will make their debut in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after an impressive qualifying campaign.
The South African side booked their place in the competition proper with a 6-1 aggregate triumph over Mauritius’ ASPL 2000, securing a historic qualification for the tournament.
Their arrival adds another dimension to the group, with the club seeking to translate their domestic ambitions into a strong showing on the continental stage.
However, Durban City face a significant test against opponents with greater experience in African competitions. Their ability to adapt to the demands of the group stage could determine how far they progress.
Group-stage race begins in November
The race for quarter-final places will begin between November 27 and 29, when the opening round of fixtures in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage takes place.
Matchday two is scheduled for December 4-6, with the third round of matches set for December 18-20 before the competition pauses for the year.
The group-stage campaign will resume in January, with matchday four scheduled for January 8-10, followed by the fifth round from January 15-17.
The final round of group-stage fixtures will be played between January 22 and 24, when the teams will discover whether their performances have been sufficient to secure progression to the quarter-finals.
