Liverpool join Chelsea in race to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott during the forthcoming January transfer window, with Chelsea also preparing to renew their interest in the 23-year-old.

Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Liverpool are competing with Chelsea for Scott, who has become an increasingly important player for Bournemouth.

Chelsea are expected to push strongly for a deal in January after failing to sign the midfielder during the previous summer transfer window. The London club attempted to persuade Scott to move to Stamford Bridge, but Bournemouth rejected the substantial financial offers made for him.

Scott has since established himself as one of Bournemouth’s key players and was recently given the opportunity to represent the England senior team during the October international break.

Bournemouth have made several attempts to extend his contract, including improved terms described as record salary enhancements within the club. However, the midfielder is believed to be targeting a move to a major club.

Scott’s current Bournemouth contract runs until the summer of 2028, giving the club a strong negotiating position if a potential transfer develops.

Bournemouth could nevertheless agree to sell him in January if they receive an offer they consider suitable. Reports indicate the club would demand a fee approaching £100m before entering formal negotiations over the player’s departure.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is said to have identified the former Bristol City midfielder as the ideal addition to strengthen his midfield options.

Chelsea are widely expected to test Bournemouth’s resolve by submitting a substantial opening bid once the January transfer window officially opens. The club’s previous interest, combined with its failure to reach an agreement in the summer, means Scott remains a priority target.

Chelsea currently appear to be ahead in the race for his signature, but Liverpool are also monitoring the situation closely.

Liverpool have placed Scott on their shortlist of midfielders they would like to sign in January as they assess alternative options in the market.

The Anfield club view the player as a potential long-term investment and believe he could flourish within their tactical system. However, it remains unclear whether Liverpool would be prepared to meet Bournemouth’s significant financial demands during the middle of the season.

With Scott tied to Bournemouth until 2028, any club seeking to sign him may face a substantial transfer fee. Chelsea are expected to establish the initial asking price through their first offer, while Liverpool will decide whether the proposed cost fits their plans for the winter window.
