Barcelona challenge Spanish federation sanction in Julian Alvarez dispute

Barcelona will appeal a €602 fine imposed by the Spanish Football Federation following a complaint from Atletico de Madrid over the club’s interest in Julian Alvarez.

The decision relates to Barcelona’s attempts to pursue the Argentina striker, who is under contract with Atletico de Madrid until June 2030. His agreement reportedly contains a €500m release clause.

Atletico accused Barcelona of contacting Alvarez and trying to persuade him to move despite his existing contract. The Madrid club argued that the discussions took place during the contractual protection period, when negotiations with a player are subject to specific regulations.

The Spanish Football Federation subsequently fined Barcelona €602, a punishment viewed as minimal given the size and status of the club.

According to Marca, however, Barcelona has decided not to pay the penalty and will challenge the ruling in an attempt to have it overturned.

The Catalan club considers the sum “negligible”, but says its refusal to pay is not motivated by the amount involved. Instead, Barcelona believes the contact with Alvarez was legitimate and that it did not breach any rules.

People within the club reportedly described the sanction as “laughable”, acknowledging that the financial penalty was insignificant for a club of Barcelona’s scale. Their objection, they say, is based on principle rather than cost.

Barcelona maintains that its approach to Alvarez was lawful and insists that Atletico Madrid was informed directly of its interest in the forward.

The club is therefore expected to appeal the fine, along with any other sanctions connected to the same case.
