Mourinho’s tactical gamble leaves Barcelona searching for answers after Real Madrid victory

Real Madrid’s 1-0 win at Camp Nou exposed Barcelona’s difficulties in the biggest matches, with Jose Mourinho’s carefully structured approach disrupting the home side and reducing the gap to the league leaders to three points.

Barcelona endured their most uncomfortable and demanding match of the season on Sunday, producing a performance far below their usual level. Their passing lost its fluency, their attacks lacked their familiar speed and anxiety increasingly affected the players’ decisions against a Real Madrid side that identified and exploited their weaknesses.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona’s attempt to press high from the opening stages was poorly executed. Lamine Yamal advanced alone towards Lunin without a team-mate close enough to support him, allowing Dean Huijsen to carry the ball out of defence comfortably. Real Madrid were then able to move possession from one side of the pitch to the other before finding the third man and progressing their attack.

The opening goal illustrated the effectiveness of that plan. After Yamal’s unsuccessful press, Barcelona failed to close down the player in possession and the ball reached Bernardo Silva. With time and space available, he sent a long pass towards Marc Cucurella, who had moved into an advanced position.

Cucurella needed only two touches before finding Diomande, who burst forward from a central area. The Ivorian then delivered a low cross which Gerard Martin failed to clear properly. The ball struck Mbappe before ending up in the net, with an element of fortune involved in the finish.

Man-to-man approach frustrates Barcelona

Real Madrid’s superiority was not limited to their use of the ball. Their first-half defending was aggressive and highly disciplined, with Mourinho instructing his players to follow their opponents closely in man-to-man situations.

Huijsen and Konate repeatedly tracked their assigned players deep into the opposition penalty area. Mourinho recognised that Real Madrid had not yet developed complete defensive cohesion when retreating into deeper positions, so he chose to give each player a direct opponent to monitor.

That approach reduced hesitation and limited Barcelona’s ability to alter the direction of attacks through coordinated movement, defensive withdrawals or positional rotations. Barcelona also failed to exploit the spaces in central areas because they lacked a player able to make off-the-ball runs behind the defence and break Real Madrid’s lines.

The individual contest between Yamal and Cucurella was particularly significant. Yamal tried several ways to attack the defender, but could not get beyond him. Whenever the Barcelona forward received possession, Cucurella closed him down quickly, forcing him to face away from goal and move the ball backwards.

Real Madrid also won more physical duels and imposed a greater intensity in the challenges. Their defensive organisation helped them move more efficiently, conserve energy, recover possession faster and launch attacks with greater freshness.

Camavinga changes the game

As Barcelona began to exert more control late on and Bernardo Silva’s influence diminished through fatigue, Mourinho made an important change from the bench. Eduardo Camavinga’s introduction proved decisive during a period when tiredness between the 70th and 90th minutes often has a major bearing on results.

Aurelien Tchouameni, who was at risk of suspension and restricted by the circumstances of the match, received valuable support from his compatriot. Camavinga worked hard defensively and made a crucial movement into space as the players around him began to tire.

He won a foot race against Cubarsi and reached the ball at exactly the right moment, setting up Mbappe with an excellent scoring opportunity. The move also followed a costly loss of possession by Gabriel Jesus after he had come on as a substitute.

The changes ultimately helped Real Madrid contain and frustrate Barcelona, leaving Hans-Dieter Flick with several issues to address in major matches. Mourinho, meanwhile, returned to Camp Nou without defeat, strengthening belief in his project and securing a victory over Barcelona that few of his predecessors managed.
