Sekhukhune United coach Papi Zothwane believes his side can go all the way in the Carling Knockout after a 3-1 victory over Richards Bay secured their place in the quarter-finals.
Babina Noko produced a convincing performance at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday to reach the tournament’s last eight, and Zothwane says the competition provides a realistic opportunity to challenge for the trophy.
“We want to progress further but it will take the hard work, discipline and willingness from our players. As a team, as a group, we have set our targets. In this cup, you play three games and you are in the final and you can even win it,” Zothwane said.
“This is a target that we’ve set as a group and it’s possible. It’s achievable.”
Sekhukhune United’s next objective is to advance beyond the quarter-finals, but Zothwane is already focused on the possibility of reaching the final after only three matches in the knockout competition.
The coach also praised defender Samba O’Neil, who joined Sekhukhune United from Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko three months ago. O’Neil, a 26-year-old Niger international, has played four matches across all competitions since arriving in South Africa.
Zothwane said the defender had made an impressive transition to a new club and country, despite having to adapt quickly to unfamiliar teammates, names, surroundings and team culture.
“Samba is a mature player, a quality player and a team player. It’s very difficult to adjust from another country and start games and adjust quickly in knowing names, the teammates, the atmosphere in the team, the culture,” he said.
“I think he’s adjusted very well. He’s one quality player … a defender that can play with both legs, can anticipate, jump and in the set-pieces give you something. It’s very rare to find in the modern game.”
O’Neil’s versatility and ability to contribute at set-pieces have made a strong impression on Zothwane, who also believes the defender has strengthened the team’s organisation and leadership.
“He has added a good defensive structure and good leadership in our team, and he’s a player that any team would want to have.”
