Scottland FC sack head coach Norman Mapeza after Champions League exit

Scottland FC have parted ways with head coach Norman Mapeza with immediate effect following the Zimbabwean club’s failure to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

The club confirmed Mapeza’s departure in a statement released on Monday, 26 October 2026, bringing an end to his tenure just seven months after his appointment in March.

Although Scottland FC did not disclose the specific reasons behind the decision, the announcement comes after their elimination from the second qualifying round of the 2026-27 CAF Champions League.

The Zimbabwean side had put themselves in a strong position to progress after securing a 2-0 victory over Angolan giants Petro Luanda in the first leg.

However, they were unable to protect that advantage in the return fixture, suffering defeat that ended their hopes of reaching the competition’s group stage.

The disappointment proved a significant setback for the club, who had been targeting a place among Africa’s leading teams in the continental competition.

In its statement, Scottland FC thanked Mapeza for his contribution during his time in charge and wished him well in his future endeavours.

“The club thanks Coach Mapeza for his service, commitment and contribution during his tenure and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement read.

The club also moved swiftly to announce a replacement, appointing former team manager Peter Ndlovu as interim head coach while the search for a permanent successor continues.

Ndlovu will now be tasked with maintaining stability within the squad and helping the team refocus on their domestic campaign following their continental disappointment.

Scottland FC said they remained committed to their objectives for the remainder of the season, stressing the importance of unity, stability and competitiveness during the transition.

“The club remains firmly focused on its objectives for the remainder of the season and is committed to maintaining stability, unity and a competitive spirit within the team,” the statement added.

The club also expressed appreciation to its supporters and stakeholders for their continued backing, calling for their trust and encouragement as the team adjusts to the coaching change.

Mapeza’s departure marks another significant development for Scottland FC as they seek to recover from their Champions League disappointment and maintain their ambitions for the remainder of the 2026-27 season.

Attention will now turn to Ndlovu’s interim spell and whether he can steady the team while the club works towards appointing a permanent head coach.
